Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards 2010
Objective
To recognize excellence and innovation in structural engineering projects designed by SEA-MW firms.
Mission Statement
The Structural Engineers Association of Metropolitan Washington (SEA-MW) Excellence in Structural Engineering (ESE) Awards recognize projects demonstrating exceptional innovation, creativity and constructability, and structural engineers who have made outstanding contributions to the profession.
Eligibility
Entry must be submitted by a member firm of SEA-MW. The entry fee for non-member firms includes a complimentary 1 year membership to SEA-MW.
Construction of entry projects must have been completed since January 2007. New building projects, renovations, structural upgrades, and transportation structures are eligible. Projects may be located anywhere in the United States and in the world. Structural design must be as per the International Building Code (IBC) requirements.
For firms with multiple offices, at least 80% of the structural design work on the entry project must have been completed by the firm’s branch office located in Metro Washington D.C.
Categories of Awards:
Awards will be presented in six project categories:
1. New buildings under $10M in construction cost.
2. New buildings ranging between $10M and $50M in construction cost.
3. New buildings over $50M in construction cost.
4. Renovations under $10M in construction cost.
5. Renovations ranging between $10M and $25M in construction cost.
6. Renovations over $25M in construction cost.
7. New transportation structures including bridges, tunnels, and viaducts.
SEA-MW ESE Outstanding Project Awards & Merit Awards will be selected at the discretion of the jury. Entries are limited to one per firm per category. Previous winning entries may not be resubmitted.
Construction Cost:
The stated construction cost of the entry should be the approximate construction cost of the facility being entered, exclusive of site construction costs or the cost of other portions of the project.
Judges:
The selection of award recipients will be made by a distinguished Jury of Professionals from outside the Metro-DC area. There will be 5 jurors including 3 licensed structural engineers, 1 contractor and 1 professor of structural engineering.
Judging Criteria:
Structural engineering achievement
Creativity of structural design
Technical innovations and their influence on design
Ingenuity of design for efficient use of material and labor
How the design solved unusual problems
Quality of execution
The manner in which the above criteria apply to the entry should be described in Part 7 of the Entry form. Entrants should consider all phases of the project, including the plan, design, and construction.
Preparation Guidelines:
Project entries must include the following material, bound in a ring, in the order given:
1. Completed SEA-MW ESE entry form.
2. A maximum of 10 Photographs, 8”x10” in size, of various aspects of the project.
3. Architectural/structural drawings. Architectural drawings shall be plans and elevations only. Structural drawings may include special details. All submitted drawings shall be half-size construction drawings with maximum dimensions of 18”x24”. Maximum submission of 20 sheets. Drawings must be legible.
4. Entry fee.
5. An electronic copy, placed on a CD, of all photos and of all Entry Form materials. Note that all photos must have a minimum resolution of 600 dpi in their original format. All electronic materials are to be in pdf or dwf format.
*No structural calculations are to be submitted.

Upon receipt of a complete Entry package, a postcard will be sent confirming receipt and completeness of package.
Notification and Presentation of Awards:
Notification of finalists will be made after selection by the jury. Awards will be announced at the ESE Awards Gala to be held at The Willard Intercontinental Hotel in Washington D.C on February 27, 2010.
Ownerships and Publication of Entries:
All entries become the property of SEA-MW and will not be returned. SEA-MW reserves the right to use or publish some or the entire material in publications. By entering, the entrant grants a royalty-free license to SEA-MW to use any copyrighted material submitted. Such right includes publication of photographs and names of award winners without compensation to entrants.
