2009 Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards Gala

SEA-MW held its third annual awards gala in Washington, DC on Saturday, February 28, 2009. The Association recognized Excellence in Structural Engineering by awarding competing firms with eight Outstanding Project Awards and Merit Awards, and one structural engineer with the Outstanding Achievement Award.

This year, the Awards Committee, chaired by Michael Goss of Rathgeber/Goss Associates, attracted 150 individuals to the gala. The other members of the committee were Zachary Kates of Thornton Tomasetti, Justin Domire of Rathgeber/Goss Associates, Rupa Patel of SK&A, Matthew Memberg of HDR and Colleen Nasta of McMullan Associates.

As was done the previous two years, judges were selected from a location outside the Washington, DC area to avoid any conflicts of interest during the judging process. The Judging Committee was comprised of five highly distinguished individuals from Atlanta, Georgia. These were Michael Fletcher, Director, Atlanta office, Halvorson and Partners, Structural Engineers; Michael Freberg,Vice President and Regional Preconstruction Director, Brasfield and Gorrie; Greer Pruitt, President, Pruitt Eberly Stone; Roberto Leon, Professor, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology; and the chair of the jury, Mr. Martin Cuadra, Senior Principal and Founding Partner of Uzun & Case Engineers, who joined us for the evening.

The Outstanding Achievement Award went to Dr. Azer Kehnemui, Principal at SK&A Structural Engineers, for his significant contributions to the structural engineering profession.

Outstanding Project Awards were presented in four categories, to Cagley & Associates in the New Buildings $10-$50M category for the Center for the Intrepid in Fort Sam Houston, TX; Thornton Tomasetti in the New Buildings over $50M category for the Nationals Park in Washington, DC; Meyer Consulting Engineers in the New Buildings under $10M category for The Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center in Silver Spring, MD; and SK&A Structural Engineers in the Renovations over $10M category for The Woodward Building in Washington, DC.

Merit Awards went to KCE Structural Engineers for Specialized Office Building in Washington, DC; Thornton Tomasetti for the Wesley Brown Field House at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; Cagley & Associates for the Aircraft Maintenance Hanger Complex at Quantico Marine Corps Base, Virginia; SK&A Structural Engineers for 55 M Street, SE, Washington, DC and for the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel Loading Dock Expansion in Washington, DC; and Structron Engineering for the Ocean City Fishing Center in Ocean City, Maryland.
