SEA-MW held its fourth annual awards gala at the Willard Intercontinental in Washington, DC on Saturday, February 27, 2010. The Association recognized Excellence in Structural Engineering by awarding competing firms with ten Outstanding Project Awards and Merit Awards, and one structural engineer with the Outstanding Achievement Award.

This year, the Awards Committee, chaired by Michael Goss of Rathgeber/Goss Associates, attracted 160 individuals to the gala. The other members of the committee were Justin Domire of Rathgeber/Goss Associates, Rupa Patel of SK&A, Matthew Memberg of HDR, Kate Williamson of Cagley & Associates, Kelly Dooley of Rathgeber/Goss Associates and Chris Shoemaker.

As was done the previous three years, judges were selected from a location outside the Washington, DC area to avoid any conflicts of interest during the judging process. The Judging Committee was comprised of five highly distinguished individuals from Atlanta, Georgia. These were Michael Fletcher, Director, Atlanta office, Halvorson and Partners, Structural Engineers; Michael Freberg,Vice President and Regional Preconstruction Director, Brasfield and Gorrie; Greer Pruitt, President, Pruitt Eberly Stone; Roberto Leon, Professor, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology; and the chair of the jury, Mr. Martin Cuadra, Senior Principal and Founding Partner of Uzun & Case Engineers.

The Outstanding Achievement Award went to Allyn E. Kilsheimer, Principal at KCE Structural Engineers, for his significant contributions to the structural engineering profession.

Outstanding Project Awards were presented in four categories, to SK&A Structural Engineers in the New Buildings $10-$50M category for 300 New Jersey Avenue in Washington, DC; Robert Silman Associates in the New Buildings over $50M category for Historic DC Courthouse modernization and Expansion in Washington, DC and for Renovations $10M to $25M category for the Eastern Market Rehabilitation in Washington, DC; and Keast & Hood in the Renovations under $10M category for the Ballenger Creek Barn Stabilization in Frederick, MD.

Merit Awards went to Rathgeber/Goss Associates for the Dominican House of Studies Academic Center & Theological Library in Washington, DC; Thornton Tomasetti for the Johns Hopkins Hospital New Clinical Building in Baltimore, Maryland; SK&A Structural Engineers for Constitution Center, Washington, DC , Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church in Washington, DC and for 901 K Street, NW, in Washington, DC; and Desman Associates for the Building ‘P’ Parking Garage at National Harbor, Maryland.
