2014 Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards Gala


SEA-MW held its eighth annual awards gala at the Ronald Reagan Building/International Trade Center in Washington, DC on Saturday, February 22, 2014. The Association recognized Excellence in Structural Engineering by awarding competing firms with Outstanding Project Awards and Merit Awards in six categories. In addition, three individual awards were presented: the Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award, the Rising Star Award, and the Chairperson’s Award.

This year, the SEA-MW Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards Committee, chaired by Ms. Rupa M. Patel of Smislova Kehnemui & Associates, attracted about 180 individuals to the gala. The other members of the Awards Committee include Ms. Kate Williamson of Cagley & Associates, Mr. Nehemias Iglesias of Cagley & Associates, Ms. Jennifer Vogel of Rathgeber/Goss Associates, Mr. Bill McClain of Ehlert/Bryan, and SEA-MW Board Liaison, Mr. Justin Domire, of Rathgeber/Goss Associates. Current SEA-MW Chairperson, Ms. Peggy Van Eepoel of Weidlinger Associates welcomed the attendees as we celebrated a successful year for the local structural engineering industry.

The Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award went to Mr. Edward J. Scullen for his significant contributions to the structural engineering profession.

2014 was the inaugural year for the Rising Star Award, which recognizes exceptional leadership and contributions to the structural engineering community by a junior engineer. Mr. Christopher Crilly was the first annual Rising Star Award winner.

Dr. Louis Geschwindner, Professor Emeritus of Architectural Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University, attended the Awards Gala once again this year as a special guest to present the project awards.

Similar to previous years, judges outside the Washington, DC area selected the project award winners in an effort avoid conflicts of interest during the judging process. This year, our Judging Committee was comprised of five highly distinguished individuals from Minnesota: Daniel E. Murphy, P.E., Principal at Meyer Borgman Johnson; Catherine French, Ph.D., I.T. Distinguished Professor, Department of Civil Engineering at University of Minnesota; Kendall Griffith, Vice President of Operations at the Minneapolis Office of Mortenson Construction; Michael Lederle, P.E., S.E., Vice President of Engineering at Opus AE Group; and Paul Asp, P.E., S.E., LEED AP, Vice President and Director of Structural Engineering at HGA Architects & Engineers.
